History
In 1940, Leon Kimball Johnson and Donald Lee Bosworth founded Lee Kimball, Inc.—a small, client-centered business offering home appliances, heating systems, installations, and service. Five years later, the company installed its first kitchen, and Lee Kimball Kitchens was born.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Leon Johnson (now a sole proprietor) focused on kitchens and grew his business, obtaining both his plumber’s and electrician’s licenses along the way so he could better serve his clients. He helped form the New England chapter of the American Institute of Kitchen Dealers (now the National Kitchen and Bath Association, or NKBA) and in 1969 was among the first group of 25 people to become Certified Kitchen Designers (CKD).
The company continued to thrive in the 1970s, gaining recognition as an innovator of design and cutting-edge products for the kitchen. Leon Johnson’s grandsons, Bruce and Gregg, both became increasingly involved with the business and purchased it from their grandfather in 1989, incorporating as Lee Kimball Kitchens. That year, they opened a new showroom on Friend Street in Boston, moving to a larger space on Canal Street five years later.
Today, the company—recently rebranded as Lee Kimball—has expanded in response to customer demand and now offers complete design-build services and cabinetry for all kinds of home renovation projects. We have moved to a spacious new location in Winchester, where we continue to uphold Leon Kimball Johnson’s key business principles: Serve clients with respect, complete projects on time and on budget, and make innovation a priority.
